Follow these steps to install a full-width front bumper on your Jeep JL or Gladiator JT, including winch prep, fog light wiring, and torque checkpoints.
Quick answer
To install a full-width front bumper on a Jeep JL or Gladiator JT, remove the factory bumper, transfer or mount your winch and fog lights, then bolt the new bumper to the frame and torque all hardware to spec. Work slowly and check fitment at each stage.
Why full-width bumpers need a careful install
Full-width bumpers extend across the entire front of the Jeep, so they protect more of the grille and fenders than stubby bumpers. That extra coverage also means they are heavier and can interfere with factory tow hooks or skid plates if not aligned correctly. Taking time to test-fit before final torque saves you from redoing the job.
Check your JL or JT model year and trim
Bumper mounting points are consistent across JL and JT models, but plastic bumper trims and fog light connectors can vary. If your Jeep came with a plastic bumper, you may need additional brackets or adapters that are not included with every bumper. Verify what your kit includes before you start.
Installation steps
- Disconnect the battery and remove the factory bumper: Disconnect the negative terminal to avoid electrical shorts when working on fog lights. Unbolt the factory bumper and set it aside; keep the hardware organized for reuse if needed. Label or bag the factory bolts so you don't mix them with the new bumper hardware.
- Test-fit the new bumper and check clearance: With help, lift the new bumper into place and loosely install the main mounting bolts. Check clearance around the grille, fenders, and any skid plate. Adjust before tightening. If the bumper contacts the grille or fenders, stop and check for bent brackets or missing spacers.
- Mount the winch and accessory lights: If you are installing a winch, bolt it to the bumper's winch plate before final tightening. For fog lights, use the supplied light adapter brackets to mount factory fog lights or LED cube lights. Route winch cables and light wiring away from sharp edges and moving parts before you tighten everything down.
- Wire the fog lights: Connect the fog light wiring to the factory harness. Use the supplied adapter brackets to secure the lights. Test the lights before fully tightening the bumper. If the fog lights don't work, check the ground connection and fuse before assuming a faulty light.
- Torque all hardware to spec: Tighten the main bumper-to-frame bolts to the torque specified in your Jeep's service manual. Tighten winch and D-ring hardware to the winch manufacturer's specs. Do not guess torque values. Re-torque all bolts after 100 miles of driving, as new installations can settle.
- Reconnect the battery and test everything: Reconnect the negative terminal. Turn on the fog lights and test the winch (if installed) with no load. Check that the bumper does not interfere with the steering or suspension. Do a final walk-around to ensure no tools or hardware are left under the hood or on the bumper.
